Leighton Pyke, Senior Development Manager for Little Projects, has completed the six day 1100km+ Chain Reaction Challenge through New Zealand’s scenic South Island.

The Chain Reaction Challenge unites passionate property professionals for a riding adventure to raise money for children’s charities. In 2015 the money raised went to Very Special Kids and the Starlight Foundation.

The six day tour wound from Christchurch to the stunning West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, cycling through Arthur’s Pass, Franz Joseph, Fox Glacier, the Crown Range from Wanake, through the adventurous Queenstown before finishing with Coronet Peak Climb.

Leighton raised over $55,000.

"I know it will be extremely challenging on my body, but I know it can’t compare to the challenges some critically/terminally ill children and their families are facing every day"

Very Special Kids

Very Special Kids is a charity organisation that supports children with life-threatening conditions.

The organisation has operated Very Special Kids House since 1996, Australia’s first and Victoria’s only children’s hospice, providing planned and emergency respite and end-of-life care for children.

Very Special Kids currently supports over 800 children from across Victoria, of which over 170 use the House each year. At any one time in Victoria, there is estimated to be over 1,900 children with life-threatening conditions who may be in need of palliative care.

Chain Reaction’s donation to Very Special Kids in 2014 will allow for a renovation of the House, opening up more beds and enabling the organisation to care for 20 more children each year.

Starlight Children’s Foundation

Since 1988 Starlight has been brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Through a range of innovative programs, Starlight aims to restore some of the fun, laughter and joy that serious illness takes away.

Starlight currently reaches one in three of the 600,000 children hospitalised annually in Australia – we’d like to help them reach “three out of three”

Starlight provides programs integral to the total care of seriously ill children, while health professionals focus on treating the illness, Starlight is there to lift the spirits of the child, giving them the opportunity to laugh, play and be a child again. Starlight programs include: Starlight Express Rooms, Starlight Fun Centres, Starlight Wish Granting, Starlight Express Vans, Starlight Escapes, Starlight “On Demand”

In 2014, both the Victorian and Queensland Chain Reaction events will be supporting the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Funds raised from 2014 Victorian Chain Reaction Challenge will enable Starlight to run the Starlight Express Room and the Starlight Captain’s Ward Visitation Program at the Monash Children’s Hospital for 12 months.

In Queensland, funds raised will enable Starlight to run the Starlight Express Room at the Mater Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
